#REVIEW - Maybe Not, A Novella by Colleen Hoover

Description:

Colleen Hoover, the New York Times bestselling author of Maybe Someday brilliantly brings to life the story of the wonderfully hilarious and charismatic Warren in a new novella, Maybe Not.

When Warren has the opportunity to live with a female roommate, he instantly agrees. It could be an exciting change.

Or maybe not.

Especially when that roommate is the cold and seemingly calculating Bridgette. Tensions run high and tempers flare as the two can hardly stand to be in the same room together. But Warren has a theory about Bridgette: anyone who can hate with that much passion should also have the capability to love with that much passion. And he wants to be the one to test this theory.

Will Bridgette find it in herself to warm her heart to Warren and finally learn to love?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

MY TAKE:
5 STARS!
This is a 129 page novella in the New Adult genre that should be read by 17+ as there are sexual situations in this book, and it is mentioned on the Amazon page, too.
This book is told from Warren’s point of view! Yes, we get a complete novella from him! That’s what we asked Colleen (the author) for, and she delivered!!!
Prankster Warren. Now the prank is on him! There is a NEW roommate in the house and it’s a GIRL! Her name is Bridgette, and she is M E A N! Mean, mean, mean!
Warren is TICKED! He is SO ticked off he acts and throws temper tantrums like a little boy! They both act like they hate each other, slamming doors on one another, dirty looks, and the only exchange between them is negative. Warren even complains to Ridge! (Yes! We get a little peek of Ridge and
But . . . you know what? That makes Warren like her! Yes! He’s becoming obsessed with her. Now he wants Bridgette, and does everything he possibly can to get her, too!
The bickering, the bantering, the pranks, and maybe even a big one that backfires on him! Bridgette is great at giving back to what is doled out at her!
Oh, the sexual tension between these two is ah .  . , mazing!! Whew! There might be some HOT sexual scenes, too, but I won’t say between who!
Warren says this about Bridgette:

She’s so confusing. She’s so frustrating. She’s so damn unpredictable. She’s nothing I’ve ever wanted in a girl. And absolutely everything I need.

Yes, Warren might be becoming smitten with this bitch of a girl! But is Bridgette getting smitten with Warren? That’s the question!
So, because of the short length of this book, I don’t want to give too much away!
This is truly a Colleen Hoover story you MUST read! If you are a fan of her writing, grab this NOW! I did! , this is a great place to start! You do not have to have read Maybe Someday in order to read this book, but it is neat to see some of the characters from Maybe Someday in this book!
I was so shocked to see this book, too! I was totally NOT expecting it! I keep up with Colleen on Facebook ALL the time, but I don’t remember her saying anything about this book! I must have missed it! When I saw this, I just about DIED! I HAD to have this! I HAD to read this! Thus, this review!

#REVIEW - Married by Midnight by Talli Roland

Description:
Christmas is coming . . . and so is the biggest day of Kate’s life.

While choosing a vintage dress for her Christmas Eve wedding, Kate finds a cryptic note pinned to the inside of a 1930s gown. As doubts about her own ceremony loom, Kate is determined to track down the dress’ owner and determine what became of her – and the marriage.

Will Kate find the answers she’s seeking to propel her down the aisle, or will her discovery prompt her to call off the wedding for good?

My Take:
5 Stars!
I admit it was the cover of this book that piqued my interest in this book, then the description that got me, too! It turned out I LOVED this 60 page Novella! I am excited over this because I want to check out this author and see what else she has written! She is a British author, and I did get hung up on a few british slang words, but my husband is home on christmas vacation, and HE knew what the phrases were! I loved it! He was very helpful! Anyway, I really enjoyed reading this story! It had a great storyline to it, it was not rushed given the length, had great character development in a novella, and really has been one of the best holiday novellas I have read this holiday season!
Kate’s mother is so superstitious it’s hilarious! She believes Kate and her fiance’ are perfect together because she did their charts and everything lines up perfectly. Her mother believes in getting card readings (I would assume that meant tarot cards) done, too! She was funny! Kate, however, is beginning to wonder if her and her fiance’ are meant for each other or not because he just sits in front of the TV watching sports ALL the time. This is not Kate’s idea of being perfectly matched regardless of everything else lining up. Sorry, Mom!
Kate, her mother and sister go into this rinky dink looking store to look for a wedding gown for Kate to wear for the wedding. They only have 5 days before the wedding. Kate highly doubts she is going to find a gown in this hole in the wall store. She starts to look and something draws her to the second hand shelf where her doubts raise until she finds the perfect dress, a vintage dress, but gorgeous dress from about the 1920’s, and it has a note pinned to it. This makes Kate want to find the woman who wore this dress.
With such little time to find the woman, will she or won’t she? They start a Facebook post and Twitter post looking for the woman. Time is ticking! Kate is supposed to get married by midnight, but she feels destiny has led her to find this woman because of the note!
I’ll leave the rest to you to find out!
This is a book you can read at any time of the year because of the storyline, not just at Christmas, so enjoy it!

#REVIEW - The Billionaire's Christmas by J S Scott

Description:

This was previously titled, The Billionaire’s Angel, from the A Maine Christmas...or Two - A Duet: The Billionaire's Angel & A Mermaid Isle Christmas.

My Take:
2 Stars
I have a problem with this book. This book read more like a pornographic novella than a Romance novella. Yes, I said that. This book is marked as ROMANCE as you can see by the description Amazon has it under below. However, I have not come across and read a book like this before that has not had a warning attached to it that the book contains sexual situations like other books like this one has had, The other thing that is missing is an AGE WARNING. Why not? There is explicit sex written in this book describing EVERYTHING. Here is what Amazon says about this book:

Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #75 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

  • There is ZERO warning that there is explicit sex in this book.

Many people love reading these types of books, and there is nothing wrong with them . . . for the people who like it. The problem lies in that there was nothing mentioned in the description of this book PRIOR TO PURCHASING IT that tells us there will be pornographic scenes in it, and no one can argue the scenes are not pornographic because in erotica it is written differently. Heck, this book is not even MARKED Erotica when it should be!!! Or it should be marked PORNOGRAPHIC! Instead, we get nothing - NO WARNING! Not even an age of 17+ is notated. Go to the Amazon page that lists this book. Anyone could buy this book, including 13 year old teenagers. THAT is my huge problem with this book. I am extremely disappointed in this author and publisher, Montlake Publishing. SOMEONE should have caught this. There NEEDS TO BE A WARNING OF THE CONTENTS OF THIS BOOK.

There are many people who like ‘clean’ romances, and even some blogs who prefer to highlight clean romance books. Any ONE of them could end up buying this book because of the LACK OF WARNING OF THE CONTENT IN THIS BOOK. They are not going to be too happy about what they end up with when this book is for an audience that likes sexual situations in their books but not for people who prefer clean romances.
Again, my largest concern is for that 13 year old who ends up with this book. Even the parent would not know what is in this book. The parent would have to read this book prior to allowing their child to read it.
THIS IS WHY WE HAVE GENRES! THIS BOOK DOES NOT REFLECT THE CORRECT GENRE IT FITS INTO.
This issues NEEDS to be addressed!

About this book:
This book is a novella in the New Adult Romance genre. I had been dying to get the chance to read this one because the cover looks enticing, so holiday’ish, and it was a very enjoyable story for about almost the first half which is why I kept reading. Although, looking at the cover this large, I see a tie. Is this a kind of reference to 50 Shades? Should 'that' have been my warning about the contents of this book?
Early in this book we learn about a young teenager named Grady Sinclair, who is treated horribly, like dirt, by his own father for no reason at all but for the simple fact that he could. His father was abrupt and abusive to him, treating him less than his other three older siblings, and made sure to say-so out loud in front of anyone, further humiliating him. You really do feel bad for this young boy as he is stuck living with him as that is his father. He was constantly knocked down as being no good. In fact, Grady found out one of his older brothers comes home each year for Christmas because he knows how his father will be treating Grady so terribly, and he is there to help protect him. Truth be told, Grady's father is a raging alcoholic. (I have found when someone needs to scream, yell, and bellow out loud putting other people down so bad that the victim feels berated like Grady does, only shows how little the person who is doing it thinks of “themselves”. In reality, THEY are the true coward! I say this from experience, too, as they look for a weak place wherever they can find one, and once found, they ‘never’ let up. Emphasis again on the word 'never'. It is an extremely sad, sick, and pathetic kind of person who acts like this. This kind of person NEVER changes, and it will rub off on any children around that person who is the victim. The victim(s) need to get out of there!
I LOVED it when something horrible happens to his father! As with anyone who goes through this, though, they often shut down and tend to become mean, too. They have lost ALL self-confidence, and that is awfully hard to build that back up by yourself.
Years go by . . . we meet the main character in this book, a woman named Emily who runs a charity. She had met a new boyfriend who ended up stealing money from her very large charity center she ran. It was tens of thousands of dollars, enough for a christmas party, food, gifts and more to help kids who needed it. Unfortunately, she trusted this man and foolishly left the room that had the money in full sight, and the boyfriend was in the same room. She was called out of the room, never giving it a thought about leaving him in the room with the money, so . . . he stole ALL the money and disappeared. He turned out to be a con artist and definitely conned her. By the time she figured out what happened, the idiot was long gone.
Now what was she supposed to do? How was she supposed to be able to put on this huge charity christmas program that so many people, in particular kids, were depending on her for? Everyone knew it was coming as it had been planned for for so long. Most importantly, how would she be able to give the kids who need so much what they needed? She was devastated.
She got an idea to approach this billionaire she knew, a man named Grady, but supposedly he had a reputation of being very mean man. She wanted to ask him if he would donate money towards the program. Off she went to get up the nerve to go knock on his door and ask him. When she met him, she felt an instant attraction towards him, but figured she had nothing to worry about because she is a larger sized woman, and most men don’t prefer women who are larger but rather very thin. Nothing to worry about at all. In a way it felt kind of good. Later, however, she quickly finds out this did not mean anything to this man, as he was attracted to her despite her being overweight. He actually prefers women who were a little heavier. (She mentions her weight about herself several times in this story, so she really had a hang-up about her weight.) He ended up agreeing to donate money, and ended up giving her a million dollars! There was a catch, though. She had to stay with him and provide him with anything he wanted for one week, through the holidays, too. (This did not seem realistic to me here. Why would you agree to spend christmas with a strange man? What about her family and friends?) She was instantly concerned, worrying this may mean sexual favors, too, (again not believable because she came right out and asked him if that would be something he was expecting. WHO would ask that?) He pretty much said, ‘only if you want it to’. As Emily got to really know Grady, she thought he really was a very unselfish man despite what the rumors about him were. Eventually Emily stays her ‘week’ with Grady, and
As I read further into this story, it completely weakens to no story and ‘all sex’. The sex is extremely descriptive, detailed, and explicit. I'm not a prude, believe me, but I do much prefer more subtle references when sex is involved in a book, or if it is even hinted at, or if it’s written, it’s done so in a way that leaves it more to our imagination rather than the way they it is written in this book. This book has several complete, entire scenes of sexual encounters between Emily and Grady that are so descriptive, detailed, and explicit. Words are used that could be be described as pornographic, not even erotic. Nothing at all is left to the imagination in this book. The sex is so detailed, as much as it could possibly be and then some. We are talking everything, including oral sex, detail by detail. There are so many detailed sexual situations you couldn’t miss them if you tried to as I flipped through the pages after having enough from the first encounter. I’m still left wanting more of this story, but I’m not going to get it. At least not with this kind of sex going on.                                                                                                                                                              I can’t say this book is erotica, but more pornographic in nature. I looked up the definition of erotica and pornography in writing. This is what I found: If it has a story to it, it is supposed to be more on the erotica side, and pornography doesn’t really care about the characters or situations. Okay. If that be so, then the last half of this book IS pornographic, even if Emily and Grady DO end up falling in love. (Falling in love? Let’s call it falling in pure lust.) It was the words that are used as to why I am calling this book pornographic. Words “I” can’t even use in a review. I can’t even write an example of the sex in this review because my review would then be considered pornographic. “I” could get into trouble and NOT have my review posted because of the words I used that were in this book.
If this author wants to write this kind of book, then more power to her, but LABEL IT CORRECTLY AND WARN READERS WHO DON'T WANT TO READ SEXUALLY EXPLICIT STORIES AND FOR THOSE WHO ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 18!

#REVIEW - How the In-Laws Wrecked Christmas, A Short Story by Fiona Gibson

Description:
A funny, festive short story from bestseller Fiona Gibson. Just the thing to curl up with on a cold winter night.

Christmas in the country. What could be better? All you need is one country house, one gorgeous boyfriend and a liberal dusting of snow. Right?

That’s what Anna thinks and she can’t wait for the festivities to start. But then she meets her gorgeous boyfriend’s awful parents. And their drunk friends. And she starts to hear all about a certain ex-wife. Suddenly this doesn’t look like a very merry Christmas after all…

Christmas doesn’t always go to plan, and Fiona tells it like it is. The perfect festive read for fans of ‘Outnumbered’ and Fern Britton.

My Take:
3 Stars
I LOVE the festive cover, which is what attracted me to this FREE book! I grabbed it! It is a little wrong in the title in that these are not Anna's In-Laws. Anna and her 'boyfriend' are not married, so these technically are not her In-Laws, but VERY rude people!
This is a small novella of only 60 pages, but fun to dive into for a little escape from the lengthier novels every now and then! Anna is going to spend Christmas with her boyfriend, Ben, at his parents house. She has no idea what to expect, and he isn’t helping her much to understand what Christmas is like there. Anna is on her own. This doesn’t change any, either. So far all the friends and family are together for this huge Christmas party on Christmas Eve and everyone is drunk. Anna doesn’t feel very welcome at all, especially when she’s sees photos of Ben and his ex-wife’s wedding! How dare they! Did they bring this out just for her, or is it custom to keep these types of photos out even when Ben and his ex are divorced? All Anna wants to do is go home with her other three friends she lives with now and have a regular Christmas she is used to and loves! The final straw is when she accidentally overhears Ben and his mother talking about her. His mother asks her how serious is this relationship, such as whether or not he is going to have children with her? His answer is a
resounding NO! Ugh. That was a low blow and hit her in the stomach like a punch! The ONLY saving grace of the day she has spent there so far is Ben’s daughter, but even the time she spends with her is interrupted negatively. That’s IT! She wants to go home, but can’t tell Ben that. Instead, she goes to her room. Shortly after she gets into her room, Ben arrives. Great. Just what she didn’t want. H e is mean and nasty to her, ignoring her, and when she asks him questions about things he again ignores her. Next thing she knows is he’s snoring! Anna acts on Plan B. She goes outside and builds the snowman his daughter wanted! The rest of this story I have to leave for YOU to read! It was entertaining! I'm just glad I'm not Anna! LOL! I would LOVE to read more by this author! I see some humor in her writing!
This book was FREE at Amazon as an ebook! Yes! It IS still FREE! Grab it!
Enjoy!

#REVIEW - "A Family for Christmas" by Helen Scott Taylor

Description:
A heartwarming tale for Christmas.
A lonely career woman stranded in a blizzard, a disillusioned man who has cut himself off from women. When he rescues her from the snow and takes her into his home, the spirit of Christmas and his little girl's love work their magic.

My Take:
5 Stars!
Oh! I have found myself a new Romance author to read more from! Helen Scott Taylor’s, “A Family for Christmas” has been my favorite Christmas story so far this season out of all the Christmas books I’ve read, and I want to read more books written by this author! This is a clean romance of 75 pages long.
Out of the three main characters in this book, two adults and a little girl, the only one out of the three who knew what two people needed most was someone to in their lives to love, and that was a little girl named Polly!
Eve was driving to a meeting that was hours away from her home when a blizzard started. It was dark out by now, and very difficult to see, when an animal of some sort was in the road in front of her. She slowed to miss it, but the ice and snow had her land in the ditch instead.
As Eve was sitting in the ditch, she learned she had no cell service, either. Great. She was really stuck now. She looked around for other vehicles. None. What felt like forever did end when finally along came a tractor. The driver was a man named Tom. He explained to her there was absolutely NO getting her out of that ditch that night with the way the snowstorm was coming down. They could barely see a thing. He told her he realized this sounded strange to her, but she could either try to stay warm in her car overnight, or she could go home and stay with him. She was really stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either sit here and worry about dying of hypothermia, or maybe be safe with Tom. He had a friendly face, so she leerily trusted her gut and went with him.
Once they reached his very nice home, (phew!) she was met by his six-year-old daughter, Polly. She was adorable! As the night went on, Polly became really close to Eve, even clingy. Later that evening Eve finds out about Tom’s ex-wife. Polly dropped more than a few hints very loudly to her father that she wants a new Mommy! LOL! That sure put Tom and Eve feeling odd! This was odd enough to begin with! As they talked well into the evening, both of them realized they really would like to share their lives with another person, never quite realizing it before. Both were attracted to each other, and Tom could see Polly was more than accepting of another woman in the house, heck, she was begging for Eve to stay and not leave the next day! Eve also thought to herself that she should be thinking more of settling down because if it was like this, she wanted this!
Both Eve and Tom still feel awkward into the evening. They realize this is such an odd predicament they were in, especially with Polly interjecting things such as, ‘I want a Mommy’! This was the good part of this story and how this author wrote this book. You got an explanation of what, why, and where each character was at in their life in regards to dating, marriage, or neither, or maybe just a thought, then into the future the best each could do at the time, especially how things can change in a second, such as Eve’s car accident, and Tom’s divorce. Slowly they were learning more about each other, let alone how attracted they were to each other, but that they did not let the other in on. For what we would think was odd, the author had a believable explanation for it. The characters even discussed the oddness of the situation. We must give her some bravo for weaving that excellence into this story! Wonderful character development, discussions, daughter wanting a Mommy, etc., so even if you might think it is too quick for a possible relationship to begin, or not, there is a reason for everything, and a time for everything, too, right?!
The next day Eve finds out she's stuck at the house with Tom and Polly, again! Oooo. This is going to be hard to leave with Polly really clinging to her even more. In fact, Polly started planning what they were going to do through the day! Yikes!
You'll have to pick this short story up and read it one sitting. It’s one that will warm your heart! It's blessed with a little Christmas magic! I would LOVE to tell you more about this story, but then it would ruin the rest for you!
Enjoy the rest!
Laurie

#REVIEW "Real Elves" by Helen Smith

Description:
~ This is a short story of only 35 pages ~

In a department store in London, a little girl called Sophie visits Santa’s magical forest with her grandfather. As they emerge from the forest, Sophie’s grandfather reports her missing… but the little girl’s right there. Is she a ghost, a twin, an alien abductee—or is there some simpler explanation? Twenty-six-year-old amateur sleuth Emily Castles has fifteen minutes to figure out the puzzle before the police are called and Christmas is ruined.

REAL ELVES is a standalone story set in London. It first appeared in the anthology Naughty or Nice in aid of Kids Need to Read. The Emily Castles mysteries can be read in any order.

Helen Smith has created a great little cozy series with the charming Emily Castles Criminal Element.

My Take:
5 Stars!
A delightful, short holiday story about a Christmas Enchanted Forest made in a the center of a mall for adults and the little kids to walk through together, along with children  getting to sit on Santa’s lap while getting a photo taken with him, to boot! As the children come out of this Forest, they get to choose a special christmas ornament or, a bauble (this is the English term for a christmas ornament as this is written by an English author). Inside of this christmas ornament/bauble is a special message for the kids and they get a present!  All of this has been made for all to enjoy!
While doing a trial run before the display opens to the public, Miranda, the woman who put all of this together for a project for one of her University classes finds a little girl and her grandfather to go through this as a practice trial-run to make sure it would work without anything going wrong, and that everything was made safe for the children.
The grandfather was elated to do this with his granddaughter because he doesn’t feel he gets to see her enough. During this trial run, as the little girl and her grandfather come out of the Enchanted Forest, the grandfather says his granddaughter is missing! She can’t be! She is standing right next to him! Now there is a mystery that needs to be solved before the police are called and they arrive, and who other than Emily Castle to help solve it!
I received this ebook from the author in exchange to write a review if I wanted to, and yes, I had to as I enjoyed this book very much! It’s a wonderful holiday read, and especially if you like clean, cozy mysteries, this is sure to give you holiday enjoyment you can read in one sitting!
More of the Emily Castle series can be found in Helen Smith’s other full length novels as well! This is a nice introduction to her and her work as a Private Investigator solving cozy mysteries!

#REVIEW - That Gift! A Short Story by Sheryl Fawcett

DESCRIPTION:
A good read for Valentine's Day, too. It could be any gift, not just one for Christmas. THAT GIFT! is a short story of approximately 5400 words about the love between a husband and wife.

Have you ever received an unwanted gift from someone you love? What if the giver considered it a very special gift? Thirty years later, a wife's reaction to such a gift changes from disappointment to pure joy with a sudden realization. A husband's lack of finesse grows into a tender display of his love. Anyone in a loving marriage of many years will identify with this heart-warming story. You may, perhaps, want to share it with someone who has not yet been married for so long. Happy Valentine's Day!

MY TAKE:
5 STARS
This was a Christmas story, (not one about Valentine's day), but it holds true for ANY gift giving occasion. This story is extremely short, 23 pages, but it has a very important message in it about love.
This story is about a husband and wife and their gifts to each other throughout the years at Christmas, and one gift that was such a huge disappointment to the wife, one so bad she ends up crying when she was alone where no one could see her.
What neither of them realize at that time but do realize it later over the years is that that gift was a true gift of love. It was truly from the husband’s heart. HE chose that gift. HE thought of his wife when he chose it, and it gave him such excitement to give it to her that he thought she would love to get that gift. He never even gave it a thought as to ‘what’ the gift was. He was giving her a piece of his heart, a ‘gift of love’.
Thirty years later the wife is remembering that gift. She realizes that gift was truly a gift of love from her husband’s heart. No other gift he had given her over all the years since even compared to the excitement he had had like he did for that one gift he did that disappointed her so. She realizes it was truly 'a gift of love' from his heart. Later that evening as they are sitting outside, the same message is shown to her again, except differently this time! They both remember that gift from thirty years ago together.
So this year, if you get a gift that is the worst possible gift you could EVER get, think of who got it to you and the reason behind it. If it is a gift of love, accept that gift from that person who loves you to pieces willingly, no matter how good or bad it is! For it truly is a gift of love, and those don’t come very often at all, no matter who it may be from!
