Goodreads Description:
Based on the real-life horrors faced by thousands of girls, award-winning author Pamela Samuels Young takes readers deep inside the disturbing world of child sex trafficking in a fast-paced thriller that educates as much as it entertains.
Thirteen-year-old Brianna Walker is ecstatic. She's about to sneak off to meet her first real boyfriend—a boyfriend she met on Facebook. But Brianna is in for a horrifying surprise because her boyfriend doesn't exist. Instead, Brianna unwittingly becomes the captive of a ring of drug dealers- turned-human traffickers who prey on lonely girls from dysfunctional homes. But they’ve made a big mistake in targeting Brianna because she doesn’t meet either of those criteria.
Brianna’s Uncle Dre, a man with his own criminal past, is determined to find the niece who is more like a daughter to him. Rather than sit back and rely on police to bring Brianna home, Dre scours the dark corners of Los Angeles looking for her. He is stunned to learn that the trafficking of children isn’t just happening in other countries. It’s occurring at epidemic levels right in his own backyard.
Dre is not alone in his desperate search. Loretha Johnson knows this world well. A social worker who previously lived “the life,” Loretha now dedicates her time to saving as many young girls as she can find. She turns out to be an invaluable resource for Dre, who ultimately gets a lead on The Shepherd, a mastermind in the trafficking world whose every move is fueled by ego and greed. Dre vows to bring his reign of terror to an end.
While Brianna makes a futile effort to thwart her captors, Dre is getting closer and closer to finding her. The woman he loves, attorney Angela Evans, knows the dangers faced by sexually exploited children because she represents them in juvenile court. Angela lends her moral support and, eventually, an important clue to Brianna’s whereabouts.
As he races against the clock, Dre ultimately comes up with a daring plan—one that puts many lives in danger, including his own. But will he find Brianna before it's too late?
My Take:
5-Stars and then some!
Wow! I had NO IDEA that ANYTHING like this world went on! ALL of your prostitution is now done on the internet! Well, pretty much all of it. You still have your street girls, etc., but the way it has changed - I don't know if ANYONE young is safe or not?
Briana is NOT allowed to have a Facebook page and her mother keeps VERY close eye on that. When Briana goes on the computer, her mother's right there. What Briana's mother does not know is that Briana DOES have a Facebook account on her phone! So that is how Briana finds this 'boyfriend'.
The writing was superb. The action, even though it hurt to read, NEVER stopped. This is an excellent book to read if you want to know the realities of life out there that could face our children. Oh, there were girls younger than Briana. They were all looking for love and affection, which is what got them in this mess. Some guy paid them attention, it was told to be kept quiet, and then these monsters went to work and swiped her away.
I honestly don't know how anyone can live and work in this field helping to save our young women from these monsters, but so many do it everyday. It was hard to read. It hurt to read as to what these pimps did to these young girls. The young girls playing tricks in their heads that it wasn't so bad because they got to go shopping, etc.
Wow! What a book! Warning, though. This book is NOT for the faint of heart. We are dealing with a LOT of sex, drugs, pimps, a whole world you and I are not into. The internet - a polished look at the horrid world of prostitution! Men went on it to make their dates. If you want to be shocked, this book WILL shock you. It's not unbelievable at all. I can see how this would be going on every day.
In Michigan, one of our politicians is working to stop human trafficking. I often wondered why we needed him to do something like that, and how could our state need to have someone devoted to this all the time? Well, this is why. I had NO CLUE! None!
Again, the writing in this book was phenomenal! If you want a book that is non-stop eye-opening action, then this is one for you.

ReplyDeletePamela Samuels recently won an NAACP Image Award for this novel. So glad to see an apparently well-written, independently published novel do so well. As a traditionally published mystery author with a small publisher, this is very exciting to see.
