Although, sometimes you don't get the entire first chapter because you get all of the beginning pages in the front of the book, such as the cover page, again, The Table of Contents. the dedication page, and maybe a few others. You'll have to see what you get.)

REVIEW - One Lavender Ribbon by Heather Burch

    DESCRIPTION:

Can a stack of long-hidden love letters from a WWII war hero inspire a heartbroken woman to love again?
Reeling from a bitter divorce, Adrienne Carter abandons Chicago and retreats to the sun, sand, and beauty of Southern Florida, throwing herself into the restoration of a dilapidated old Victorian beach house. Early into the renovations, she discovers a tin box hidden away in the attic that reveals the emotional letters from a WWII paratrooper to a young woman who lived in the house more than a half-century earlier.

The old letters—incredibly poetic and romantic—transcend time, and they arouse in Adrienne a curiosity that leads her to track down the writer of the letters. William “Pops” Bryant is now an old man living in a nearby town with his handsome but overprotective grandson, Will. As Adrienne begins to unravel the secrets of the letters (and the Bryants), she finds herself not yet willing to give up entirely on love.
    MY TAKE:
    2.5 Stars - Your choice
This is so NOT for me! If you love syrupy overly-sweet stories, then pick this up. For me, this was a DNF! I couldn't get past Chapter 4 on this one. It's not realistic, and even though it is fiction, I still need to feel a sense of realism to any story, and this had none because it is just too sweet. The main character, Adrienne, throws out sayings such as, 'Before buying my house, I'd never heard of Bonita Springs, Florida'. Well, of course not! There are a lot of cities you never heard of until you end up moving to a new city from another state! Someone had steered her to move there, and wouldn't you just know it, the sickeningly sweet love letters she had found in the attic of that house ended up being written by a man who served in WWII, is still alive, and is living near her. She decided to go to his home asking to speak to him, but the  man who answered the door who happened to be his grandson, and he told her no. He is worried about his 81 year old grandfather, specifically for health reasons. He was extremely specific (and a little rude) on that very visit she would not be talking to him. She left, but she must not have understood because now she decided to take these same letters to a coffee shop and read some of them out loud to strangers, more or less asking their opinion as to what she should do about them and the man who is still alive. She conveniently left out the part where she had already gone to his home and was told NO. Of course, after showing these sappy, emotional letters around, people were encouraging her to definitely go talk to the man. (Had they known she went to his home once already and was told NO, I'm sure they would not have encouraged her to go a second time.) What do you think would have happened the second time she would have tried it? I would assume the same reaction, if not worse. In thinking of where this story is headed, I'm going to assume that this hard nosed Grandson will, by the end of this story, end up falling in love with her. Just from the description you can guess this is how it will end.
I mention this story is sappy, and here is an example. After talking to one of the men in that coffee shop, here is what she said as she was leaving.
"Thanks for your help, Leo." "Good Luck." Adrienne bid Leo good-bye with a new zeal squelched only by the pang of sadness about Gracie. (Gracie is the woman whom William wrote these letters to.) But William had returned from the war, and now she couldn't help but wonder what he'd come home to. It had been a bittersweet homecoming, no doubt. A whole new barrage of questions accompanied her as she drove the palm-lined streets toward home. How could anyone not love a man like William Bryant?
Okay, that's enough! How can she really know what kind of man William is just by reading a FEW letters he wrote to a woman in the heat of the war? That is the clue here. Of course letters will be much sappier when you are staring at death in your face.
Now, just because she found letters in her attic, does this give her ANY business to make it her own? No! The Grandson already told her 'NO' once, and he has a very good reason for it. So why is Adrienne taking it upon herself to stick her sweet sticky nose where it doesn't belong?
The paragraph I quoted goes on to say she is wondering if in these letters there is something to hide, or someone with a secret. It seemed like they were hidden, among many other 'assumptions'.
To quote some more, "She gets home and parks the car hearing it tick. Beyond the windows she hears the birds, but right now their song wasn't soothing.' A few sentences later, 'Only six years ago she had thought her world was going to be fairy-tale perfect. But there was no 'happily ever after'. We have already heard this about her life several times already. How many more times are we going to be reminded her first marriage did not work out?
Okay. I've done my 4 chapters of this book and I'm throwing in the towel. I can't go on! This is tooooooo sickening sweet and predictable for my taste. I like my stories to be realistic, and I don't like to be able to guess how they are going to end. I especially don't want to read about her changing William's grandson's disposition and get him to fall in love with her so she CAN have a fairy tale ending and live 'happily ever after'. Fiction or not, life is not like this.
Perhaps some of you will find this book very fitting for yourselves, and a great escape to indulge into, but I personally can't read the rest. Maybe this is something 'you' will like to read, and if so, go for it, but I can't. I'm used to strong main characters who don't need reassurance from other people, nor do I believe in fairy tale lives or happily ever after, but I do believe in falling in love, maybe getting married, and living a good quiet life together despite the tremendous amount of work it takes to obtain that. Next book, please!
I got this book from the Kindle First program, which I'm glad I did! The cover looked enticing, and this is exactly why we don't judge a book by it's cover!

REVIEW - "That Night" by Chevy Stevens

    DESCRIPTION

    Description

As a teenager, Toni Murphy had a life full of typical adolescent complications: a boyfriend she adored, a younger sister she couldn’t relate to, a strained relationship with her parents, and classmates who seemed hell-bent on making her life miserable. Things weren’t easy, but Toni could never have predicted how horrific they would become until her younger sister was brutally murdered one summer night.
Toni and her boyfriend, Ryan, were convicted of the murder and sent to prison.
Now thirty-four, Toni, is out on parole and back in her hometown, struggling to adjust to a new life on the outside. Prison changed her, hardened her, and she’s doing everything in her power to avoid violating her parole and going back. This means having absolutely no contact with Ryan, avoiding fellow parolees looking to pick fights, and steering clear of trouble in all its forms. But nothing is making that easy—not Ryan, who is convinced he can figure out the truth; not her mother, who doubts Toni's innocence; and certainly not the group of women who made Toni's life hell in high school and may have darker secrets than anyone realizes. No matter how hard she tries, ignoring her old life to start a new one is impossible. Before Toni can truly move on, she must risk everything to find out what really happened that night.

But in That Night by Chevy Stevens, the truth might be the most terrifying thing of all.

    MY TAKE:
    4 STARS!
The first half of this book was more of a long, drawn out young adult 'mean girls' book, from Toni's perspective as the events happened that lead up to her sister's murder, then was convicted of it while she tells us about it as she sits in prison serving her time, going back and forth between prison and the past as she tells us the story as to how she ended up in the women's prison. This sets the stage for why Toni and her boyfriend, Ryan, were arrested for murdering Toni's sister, Lucille, then found guilty for her death, and were sentenced to 15 years in prison for doing so. This was not a fair trial, not even a jury trial. It was almost as if they were both framed.
This part did take the entire first half of the book. To be honest, it was quite long, although, Chevy Stevens is not known for short novels.
The second half of the book covers the time both Ryan and Toni got out of prison and are on parole, now in their early thirties, and as they are both trying to make a new life back in their home towns, they are still, in a way, trying to find out who really murdered Lucille. This meant more trouble and blame for the both of them, and most all of the time through no fault of their own. (I really found myself yelling and screaming at the characters in this part of the book - out loud, and loudly! My husband was wondering who I was yelling at! LOL!) Eventually they figure out who was behind everything, but the results of doing so affected so many people's lives, some good and some bad, and some just shocking.
This was quite a hefty read, and you know Chevy Stevens grabs a hold of you and doesn't let you go with the way she writes. I found myself skipping a shower and bedtime, then trying to get through the next two days recovering from the loss of sleep from the book! Some say this book was not as good as some of her others, but I have to say it was not just as good, just different. Every story Steven's writes has been completely different so far, none of them the same in any way, and to compare book to book, in my opinion, shouldn't be done, at least not with her writing. Each book should stand on it's own merit, this one being no exception.
The author took on a lot in this book. I thought I had figured out who did it in the very beginning, but I was kind of wrong, yet kind of right!
I really like Chevy Stevens' books, I just wish she were more active socially with her readers on social media. I received this book for FREE from the Publisher, St Martins Press, and NetGalley, in exchange to read and write a review about it. "Free" means I was provided with ZERO MONIES to do so, but to enjoy the pure pleasure of reading it and giving my own honest opinion no matter whether it is positive or negative. PS. This is a hard one to talk about without giving too much away!

    #BlogTour and #REVIEW for "A Mother's Secret" by @AmyClipston PLUS a #GIVEAWAY for a #KINDLE FIRE to 7-6

    motherssecret-400-click

Don't miss the newest offering in the Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series from Amy ClipstonA Mother's SecretAn unwed Amish woman yearns for real love and a family. The only thing in her way is the shame she’s been carrying for half of her life. The novel received 4-1/2 stars from Romantic Times and was chosen as a Top Pick.

And this is what I think about this book:
    4 Stars!
The full name of this book is A Mother's Secret, Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series, Book 2. I read this as a stand alone and did not have any trouble. I don't know if these characters are in her previous book or not, and I don't believe they are because this author has the third book in this series coming out in print and ebook this Fall/2014, and the small description about A Dream Home, Hearts of the Lancaster Grand Hotel series Book 3, has different characters in it.
I always love every book that Amy Clipston writes, and the same is true with this book about the Amish.
Caroline, 31, is an unwed single mother to 15 year old Benjamin. She got pregnant when she was just 16 years old, and her boyfriend left town to go to Missouri. He did not even know about Caroline being pregnant as she did not even get the chance to tell him before he left. Caroline had/has no way of even finding him to be able to tell him.
In one part of this book a character mentioned to her that she had a son who disappeared 15 years ago, too, and I thought for a minute there we just might . . . but no, the author did not take it any further than that. I thought she 'could have' taken that one further, and thought she should have just to put our wondering minds at ease!
Caroline was punished and is STILL being punished for her sin she committed, despite what the Amish say that God forgives you once you have asked for forgiveness. To this day people still punish her despite her asking for forgiveness.
Since Caroline is now 31 years old and her parents and other people say she is going to be an 'old maid' more or less, and they want to set her up to marry a nice widowed Amish man who they feel is suitable for her. The problem is Caroline does not feel she needs to marry for convenience purposes and she won't. The only way she'll marry is for love.
The punishment rolls over to her son, too. If anything bad happens, he is blamed. One day the boys he was hanging around with threw stones and hurt a horse hurting it pretty badly. Benjamin got blamed for it, as usual. As punishment for this, he is sent to a man named Joshua who owns a horse farm, and he has to work until he has earned enough money to pay for the damages. None of the other boys are blamed as Benjamin is the only one singled out, which is not fair.
Meanwhile, this same Joshua, 40, never married either, owns and runs this this horse farm in honor of his dead brother. He is going through the same thing Caroline is in that his mother and others feel it is time for him to settle down and get married. They even know of the right woman for him, but he is not interested in her at all. He doesn't come out and say this, but in other ways says and show he is not going to marry at all. His mother has other ideas for him, still.
Both of these two characters wonder over and over again throughout this story, repeatedly, if they will ever find anyone worthy of falling in love with. Maybe the Amish worry too much about things.
Excellent book! Very enjoyable and written by one highly regarded author, in my book and many others! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I received this book for FREE from the Publisher, Zondervan, and NetGalley, in exchange to read and write a review about it. "Free" means I was provided with ZERO MONIES to do so, but to enjoy the pure pleasure of reading it and giving my own honest opinion no matter whether it is positive or negative. The Traveler Series Premise

    Emmy London is

a private investigator by choice and a time traveler by chance. Her super
secret ability enables her to go back in time to solve mysteries, but not
change the past. The one caveat is that she can't use it for personal gain; the
one mystery she can't solve is that of her past.

Follow Emmy as she tests the
limits of her curse, writes her own rules, and learns that 'not-a-dates' can
become relationships she never wanted all the while drinking lots of coffee.

These sexy humorous mysteries can be read as standalone novellas even as the characters evolve.

Synopsis for Destination to be Determined

Life has never been easy for
Emmy London. Raised in foster homes, she learned to never get too comfortable,
to never let anyone in. When her classmate, Chloe Oliver, disappeared at the
tender age of five, so did she. From that moment on, life was never the same.
She kept a secret and kept her distance from everyone.

    With the twentieth
anniversary of Chloe's disappearance looming, Mr. Oliver sought Emmy's
assistance, asking her to revisit the past in order to give him the closure he
so desperately needed. As a private investigator, she was accustomed to facing
unpleasant situations and sifting through others' lives. Unfortunately, this
time to do that, she had to face her own.

    Soon, she herself is being
followed. A handsome stranger insinuates himself in her life. Everything she
believed and thought she knew is called into question beginning with…can she
turn her curse into a gift?

    Her mission is clear, her
    destination is to be determined.

    Destination Derailed Synopsis

    When Emmy finally answers a
series of missed calls, the first words Sean speaks are, “Peaches is
    missing!”

    Rushing back to Shiloh Cove,
her new mission is a favor fora friend that lands her in a strip club, working
undercover.  Blaze really appreciates her new work uniform…and he’s not
    the only one
    .

Like so many others on the
force, Detective Morrow moonlights in a security position after-hours at Leather
    and Lace
.  He’s seen many girls come and go through the years without
giving it another thought, until Emmy enters his life once more, this time
wearing makeup and not much else.  Then, he can’t stop thinking about
    her.

In the midst of an alpha
pissing contest between two men who make her quiver, Emmy finds herself
embroiled in a dark and dangerous underground.  Everything she believed to
be true is put to the test.  It has been said rules are meant to be broken,
that life is all fun and games.  Yet in her case, never has so much been
at stake when Emmy finds her destination derailed.
