The Edge of Normal by Carla Norton - Psychological Suspense/Thriller - REVIEW

    RELEASE DATE:  September 10th, 2013

    Genre: Psychological Thriller/Crime/Suspense

    Publisher: St Martin's Press/Montaur Books

    PRAISE:

"This novel is brilliant." A perfect blend of literary style, psychological insight and edge-of-the-seat thriller. From journalist Poe to protagonist Reeve—and a particularly horrific incarnation of evil along the way—Norton has given us living, breathing characters that we know and understand . . . and who inhabit our imaginations after we've finished this book.” —Jeffery Deaver
The Edge of Normal is a heart-pounding thrill ride that had me holding my breath to the very end.  With a compelling, tough-as-nails heroine and a truly terrifying villain, this is a book you won’t soon forget.”—Chevy Stevens
    DESCRIPTION:
In many ways, Reeve LeClaire looks like a typical twenty-two year old girl. She’s finally landed her own apartment, she waitresses to pay the bills, and she wishes she wasn’t so nervous around new people. She thinks of herself as agile, not skittish. As serious, not grim. But Reeve is anything but normal.
Ten years ago, she was kidnapped and held captive. After a lucky escape, she’s spent the last six years trying to rebuild her life, a recovery thanks in large part to her indispensable therapist Dr. Ezra Lerner. But when he asks her to help another girl rescued from a similar situation, Reeve realizes she may not simply need to mentor this young victim—she may be the only one who can protect her from a cunning predator who is still out there, watching every move.

From the author of the #1 non-fiction bestseller Perfect Victim: The True Story of the Girl in the Box comes a novel that draws you into a chilling and engrossing world. With powerfully gripping characters and an ending that is a masterpiece of deception, Carla Norton's The Edge of Normal is a stunning debut thriller.
    My Take:
    5+ Stars!
Wow! This is an amazing book you DON'T WANT TO MISS READING! If you LOVE this genre, then you, like myself, may vote 'this book' as THE BOOK OF THE YEAR for this genre!
The protagonist in this story is Reeve LeClaire, who went through hell and back when an abductor captures her. She is held captive in a stark, horrid, dark basement for about 4 years and suffers through severe abuse that is hardly imaginable. She makes an amazing escape on her own, saving her own life. Even though they capture the man who abducted her and he is in prison serving time, she is still being watched. She has no clue this is happening, but starts to wonder after a while. Although the terror lived on in her mind as it would anyone if this were to happen to them, a special therapist, a doctor who specializes in treating people who go through these types of horrid ordeals such as this, Dr Ezra Lerner, comes along to help her. He gets her through recovery, which is quite remarkable. She is now living a normal life, although she still remembers. Years into her therapy she confides in Dr Lerner that even though she knows her abductor is in prison, she tells him *intellectually, I know it*, but she really means that deep down it still haunts her.
One day a young girl by the name of Tilly who had been abducted also, escapes her abductor, just like Reeve did. Immediately Dr. Ezra Lerner is called in to help this girl. Dr. Lerner gets an idea that would help Reeve further her recovery and Tilly's by asking her to come help with Tilly and her recovery right away. The two girls together would be able to relate to each other. With trepidation, Reeve agrees. Off she goes to try to help.
In the meantime, there are two more girls who have been abducted. This all seems like it has to point to one man, a serial killer, who is taking these girls because the MO (Method of Operation) is the seems to be like it was for Reeve, and the police believe this has to be the same abductor for all three of these girls, and possibly Reeve, too. Somehow Reeve thinks it goes a little deeper than that, and she starts her own search for this monster.
The monster finds out that Reeve is helping Tilly, eventually. He does not like this. Little does he know that Reeve is catching on to him. She puts herself into the limelight of trouble, and it's all she can do to try to remain safe herself. Does it work, though?
In this book it goes back and forth between places, yet we get to read what the serial killer is thinking and doing, learning about him, too. We learn what is driving him, and how he is threatening others, too, and everything in between.
You will be shocked, scared, unable to comprehend how a living human being can be so sick, while looking over your shoulder, rooting and cheering Reeve on!
Simply put - an amazing read NOT to be missed!
I loved this book! It was written with excellence! I was able to connect with the the characters, especially Reeve. I could feel what they were feeling, the FEAR, the worry, and more. The character of Reeve is completely believable, and when I think back to the book, I still think of her and the other characters as being so realistic. All the characters are so life-like. The suspense had you on the edge of your seat the entire time. There was not one place, until the 'end' is "The End" that you aren't wondering about the 'what if's', and even then you wonder if this really could/would happen someday in real life. This is, by FAR, the BEST thrill book of true Psychological Suspense this year, at least in my opinion! To go without reading this book is to miss the BEST OF THE BEST of chilling/thrilling Psychological suspense story, ever! This one is a MUST READ! Scroll down and read 'about the author', and that will tell you even more about 'why' you need to read this book!
I LOVE to read Psychological/Suspense/Thrillers, and guess where I found this book from again? Yep! You guessed it! The "Book Buzz 2013" book! They offered several chapters from this book, and my finger hit that REQUEST button so fast, and it was one of the BEST books I've read! I LOVED this story! LOVED it! I received this book for FREE from the Publisher, St Martin's Press/Montaur Books and through NetGalley, in exchange to read and write a review about it. It is NOT required for from this review to be either positive or negative, but of my own honest opinion. "Free" means I was provided with ZERO MONIES to read this book nor to write this review, but to enjoy the pure pleasure of reading it. CARLA NORTON is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Perfect Victim, which the FBI put on their Behavioral Sciences Unit reading list. She served as the special sections editor for the San Jose Mercury News and has written for numerous publications. She has an MFA from Goddard College and has twice served as a judge for the Edgar Awards. The Edge of Normal, which won a Royal Palm Literary Award for best unpublished mystery, is her debut novel. She lives in California and Florida.

    Also, from Goodreads:

Is THE EDGE OF NORMAL inspired by true events? Absolutely.
When a shocking kidnapping case first hit headlines, Carla Norton
wedged herself between reporters and sketch artists to cover the
trial, and later wrote PERFECT VICTIM with the prosecutor. The
book made the reading list for the FBI's Behavioral Sciences Unit
and became a #1 New York Times nonfiction bestseller.

Carla's debut crime fiction, THE EDGE OF NORMAL, is inspired by

that haunting true story. Her novel's protagonist is a 22-year-old
survivor of kidnapping and captivity. She’s scarred, flawed, and psychologically unbalanced. But ‘Edgy Reggie’ has a hot sense of
justice. And when called upon, she’s absolutely fearless.

Slated for release this September, THE EDGE OF NORMAL is already earning accolades: Jeffery Deaver says it's the "perfect blend of

literary style, psychological insight and edge-of-the-seat thriller."
Chevy Stevens calls it "a heart-pounding thrill ride that had me
holding my breath to the end."

THE EDGE OF NORMAL won the Royal Palm Literary Award for

best unpublished mystery last year, and will soon be released
in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan. The
novel is included in BUZZ BOOKS 2013 as one of the most
anticipated books of the coming fall/winter season.

Carla's 2nd true crime, DISTURBED GROUND, is now available

in ebook formats. This nonfiction thriller details the life and
    nine-murder-count trial of Dorothea Puente, a white-haired
landlady who planted bodies in her rose garden.

Carla gives book talks, speaks at conferences, and has appeared

on Larry King Live. When she's not writing books about crime,
she writes essays and really bad poetry.

These are the books I've read:

First, there is "The Edge of Normal" by Carla Norton. A serial killer had abducted a girl, she escapes, and now has had years and years of counseling. She is called upon by that Counselor to help a new young girl that that same thing happened to. Two other girls are missing as well, are they part of this same serial killer or not? - Wow! In fact, while scrolling through my photos to post it here, often times, okay, maybe more often than not, I think this cover almost looks like a cat with it's whiskers showing! I'm bad! Does anyone else think so? I thought so the first time I saw this cover! Oh, well. This is what you will get here in the US:

I literally 'just' started reading this one: "What Kind of Mother Are You" by Paula Daly. It is about an extremely busy mother who works at an animal shelter and is watching her girlfriend's kids. One of them happens to be a thirteen year old teenage girl who goes missing, thus the mother being blamed, especially because the week before another young teenage girl had been found, naked, . This is the 2nd child in two weeks. This will also release September 3rd, too!

I've been busy!! What are you reading? Leave a comment and tell us!

“Winter in Full Bloom" by Anita Higman - REVIEW - AND Kindle Fire HD Giveaway and Facebook Party!

    My Take:
    3.5 Stars!
    Released August 1st, 2013.
    Contemporary Women's Christian Fiction
This is one of the books I found in the Book Buzz 2013 book! Yes! Another one! I read a few chapters in that book out of this book and HAD to request it! Then, I got an email from LitFuse Publicity saying it is on TOUR! I entered my info hoping to get into the tour for this book, and I got in! I am SO HAPPY!
    Without further adieu . . .
I have read a lot of Anita Higman's books, and you can suffice it to say that if she wrote a book, you are going to want to read it and you'll love it. Her books are excellent! They are beautifully written and I would pick any Anita Higman book up in a second, and this NEW one is no different!
With this being Christian Fiction, and what I love about Anita Higman's writing in this genre is the religion is not forced down your throat like it can be sometimes. It is very beautiful the way the character has a personal relationship with God, and she talks to God as if in conversation with Him. I probably really like this because it was the way I was taught. She also prays, of course, and it's all done in a very nice way. This book is not preaching to you to drop what you're doing and run to a church to go save yourself. This is why I probably really like reading this author's books. The religion is there, and it's expected, you notice it, but it's not overboard, just the right kind and amount.
This book starts off with Lily on a plane for the first time practically having a nervous breakdown! This was her first flight. It was so cute as there was a little girl chewing gum and blowing big, purple bubbles, but was wise well beyond her years in age helping Lily try to relax and calm her nerves about the plane ride. This little girl knew all the symptoms of a first timer on a plane! She even knew what a panic attack was! It was a hoot! So why was she on a plane?
Allow me to officially introduce you to Lily Winter, 39, widowed, and now an empty-nester as her daughter, Julie, has gone away to college. Lily gets beckoned from her evil mother to come over to her house. It had been 10 years since Lily last saw her mother. (Her mother is a mean piece of work!) Her mother proceeds to inform Lily that she has a twin sister, Camille, who lives in Australia. This was quite a secret kept from her until now. It was never really revealed why the mother waited until she did to tell Lily about her sister. Heck, her mother could have taken that secret to her grave. She was told they were separated when they were one year old. Since Lily never knew she had a twin sister, she had to go search for her immediately, of course, and that takes us to Australia. An interesting thing to note here is her mother had a few mustard seeds on the coffee table. Was that reaching out? If so, then why was she still so mean! For instance, she was so mean, she had to pay someone to be her friend!
So, Lily takes a leave of absence from her job and flies to Melbourne, Australia, to go find her twin sister, Camille. When she gets there, she ends up meeting a man named Marcus, Australian accent and everything, but originally from Dallas, close to Lily's home, but he had no plans on moving back to Texas. (I had a hard time buying this one. You travel around the world to the opposite side of the globe and end up meeting someone who is originally from where you live?) He helped Lily look for Camille, and in between they fall in love, so there is another storyline there, yet the focus is still on the search for her sister. I had difficulty with that romance. How can you focus on finding the twin sister you never knew you even had, yet date a man you just met at the same time? I felt this a little odd, but I guess it worked because I connected with the two of them. If I were in that situation, the only thing I could be concentrating on is finding my sister, and once I did, that's the only person I would be with, not a man I just met.
This book is about forgiveness. During the last third of the book there were some more things I could not see being realistic in life, so I had a hard time with that part of the book, too. I can't explain it in the review without giving away spoilers, so I'm going to have to avoid that, but it didn't work for me. Maybe the romance, again, or perhaps the other characters? The other characters were nowhere as well developed as Lily and Marcus were, yet we are asked to and I could not. I almost did, but other things happened which pushed me further away rather than closer because in real life . . . I tried to ignore it because this is fiction, after all.
Despite that, Anita Higman's writing is always so beautiful, the way she describes things can catch you off guard as they are so descriptive. At times you are just in awe as she uses such beautifully descriptive words to describe a mundane thing and can bring it to life, that you can get lost in her writing! In this 'one' book though, I found at times it did take away from my reading experience a few times where in the past it has not. I would be reading and getting lost in the description and I would then forget what Lily was doing or talking about prior to the description. That has not happened to me in the past with Higman's writing.
The title sure is different, yet the cover - WOW! Gorgeous! When it is summer here, (as Lily is from Texas) it is Winter in Australia! They blended the two to make the cover and hit that and the name of the book SPOT ON! Amazing! Absolutely beautiful, huh! Wow! You WANT to read this book!
Even though I had a few problems with this book as mentioned above, I would still HIGHLY recommend reading this book. We all get something different out of a book, so you may get something quite different than I did. Grab your copy today and see what you think! Heck, it's Anita Higman! I received this book for FREE from River North Publishers and LitFuse Publicity in exchange to read and write a review about it. The New York Times Top 15 Best Sellers for this week ending August 18th, 2013

Welcome everyone. I am starting to write this on Thursday, August 15th instead of Saturday for Sunday's post. I can only write so much right now, but I can at least get this started! The reason I am at least getting this part started is we have had a terrible week in the terms of loss in our family, and our friends. We lost two close people to us over the span of a few days. It's been tough. There has been a lot of emotion, trying to find a lot of strength, and a lot of time where I/we haven't been able to do anything but sit and stare off into space because of the shock of this loss all at the same time.
We lost my husband's father, and we lost Jim, both 73. Jim, and his wife, Donna, are our dear friends and neighbors right across the street from us, and yes, he and his wife ARE more family to us than our own! They live right across the street from us, and I go over to visit from my wheelchair ramp, right up there ramp and into their house! We all spent a lot of time together, well into the late hours of the night. A funny thing is if you planned on just stopping in for a half hour, NOPE! LOL!!! You would end up not getting back home until a few HOURS later! We had SO MUCH FUN! We just talked, shot the breeze, etc.! I'll treasure those times, and am thankful for them. There will be more, too, with his wife, but they will be different because someone will be missing. Although, maybe now Donna and I can do some MORE fun things that we couldn't do with Jim around, like watching some chick-flicks, talk girl talk, you know! All the stuff you can't do when you're with the guys! LOL!
My husband's father had had Alzheimers, and did not recognize anyone when he was ready to go. That side of the family happens to live four hours away from us. My husband didn't have as close a relationship with his father over the last 8 or 0 years. While he was growing up, it was mainly the telephone and Christmas cards. As he grew up, his parents had divorced, and he never saw to much of his dad. At times they were a lot closer together than at different times. Even though, he still went through some grieving, and I grieved for my husband.
The problem with his father was he loved to drink alcohol like a fish, something we don't do because at one time Gordon had a problem with alcohol, too, and he has worked LONG and HARD to get over that, and his father would push it in his face. Not right! We found any get-togethers with him to be enabling to him to drink more, leaving us feeling very uncomfortable and worried as he insisted on driving and DID DRIVE WHILE INTOXICATED! You could NOT stop him. We do NOT endorse that AT ALL. That put a LOT of distance between us. Eventually we felt we 'had' to lose contact with him to STOP IT. We were worrying about other people. Even though it was a parent, and despite any parent's shortcomings, you still suffer grief if you lose them. Yes, he did go through grief. I felt for him as I have lost a parent myself and I know how TRULY difficult it is.

Okay! Enough about that! On to BETTER THINGS! The books!
